August Sander, one of the most important photographers of Cologne, lived and worked for over three decades in his adopted place of residence. He gained worldwide recognition with his influential portrait work "Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts" (“People of the 20^th Century). At the same time, he began to portray the Rhine metropolis, creating a priceless historical document.
